Drifting Aussie Style at 2010 WTAC

June 22nd, 2010  |  Published in Events

In conjunction with the 2010 WTAC at Eastern Creek Raceway, there was a drifting exhibition with some of the country’s top sliders.  Their drifting is not much different than what we have here in the States, except perhaps the lack of huge title sponsors plastered everywhere.  For as long as the drift scene has been kicking Down Under, I somehow expected it to be bigger than it was.

After all, that’s what Aussies are all about, right?  ”That’s not a knife…. THIS is a knife.  -Crocodile Dundee”

All joking aside, I guess I just “expected” the drift scene to be as big as it is here.  It is what it is, yet somehow I found myself somewhat let down that it wasn’t bigger.

I met one of the nicest guys to wear a fire suit behind the wheel of any race vehicle, Eugene Arendsen.  We had a few brief yet fulfilling conversations about the drift scene in Australia.  It really is a shame that we can’t gather these guys from across the globe and have them all compete in one arena, in a different host country, like every other year or what-not.  I realize that the economy is tanked everywhere, but if Formula Drift is capable of drawing the crowds they do, I can’t see why its otherwise fizzling elsewhere.

Am I wrong?  Leave me comments on this if you are in-the-know… maybe I just didn’t see the whole picture during my short visit.

At any rate, here are the images from the two-day event.
