Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, Day 2

Another great day of race coverage, especially for Southern California!
Not that I’m not a fan of Indycar, but Saturday is always my most exciting day of shooting because it is the ALMS main event. It has a different flavor than Indycar, IMO, and in speaking with a lot of the team staff and drivers, they really have a passion deeply rooted within their soul to be out in battle with their friends or colleagues for a “less-than-illustrious” podium compared to their Izod Indy Car cohorts.
What an exciting ALMS race it was! I had the Fernandez Racing/Lola nailed to win the event until they experienced a… well, I’ll call it a miscalculation. Because, what else could it have been? The car seemed (to me) to push into a corner that allowed the Highcroft Racing/Patron HPD Acura Prototype piloted by Simon Pagenaud to duck past and take the checkered flag.
Wait, Simon Pagenaud? Wasn’t he the second driver alongside Gil de Ferran last year who incidentally took the checkered flag in that race? The very same.
The World Challenge series was equally exciting. Tyler McQuarrie qualified at pole for his class in this sick red Lotus, and if his name sounds familiar to you perhaps it is because he is well known in the drifting community of Formula Drift. The Falken Tire Porsche GT3 was out as well, and if that sounds familiar to you maybe it’s because of this feature!
Jumping over to Indy Car, it was Will Power who took the pole for the third straight year at the streets of Long Beach. More of this to follow in Day 3 coverage.
For now, hope you are somewhat entertained by the visuallness of the day’s events…
