For Sale

This is the Sigma 50-500mm, f/4-6.3 lens, Nikon mount for their DX sensor cameras. I’ve never had quite a versatile surf lens as this; not only could I shoot the action in the lineups, I was able to quickly crank it down to 50 or 100mm when there was action up close on shore without skipping a beat.

This lens is in perfect working order. It has provided me great service!
My purchase of this lens brand new didn’t come without great deliberation. I read so many stories online about how the lens does not give good colors, or doesn’t focus well, takes forever to focus lock, etc. If you do your own research about this particular lens, you will find the same argumentative forum threads, lol. I finally broke down and purchased this lens based upon a simple fact; there just isn’t another lens on the market with as much versatility (50mm up to 500mm at a twist of a zoom ring…) with a $1,000 price tag. While others base their findings on wildlife and “birding” photography, I can attest that this lens works great for surf and action sports such as soccer and baseball.
Pro’s- This is a great lens that covers a wide range of focal lengths. I never had to take this lens of my camera when covering a surf contest, soccer game, or visiting the local arboretums. The price point of this lens makes it a seriously attractive contender! And, when fully collapsed, it is just barely larger than my Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens… wow!
Con’s- The lens thrives off lighting. While shooting surf under cloudy morning skies, I was able to wick the shutter between 1/500 to 1/800 at best. Also, when in these conditions, images presented themselves with edge softness. With that being said, it forced me to compose my shots more accurately in order to eliminate cropping in Photoshop.
I should note that it took me nearly a full year of working with this lens in conjunction with tweaking in-camera settings in order to optimize image results. I’m not thoroughly convinced that most consumers out there dedicate the time to work with their gear as intensely as I do, and the number of surfers that are now my good friends will attest to my dedication!
