Bay Street Barrels

I haven’t seen Larry since graduating the 6th grade. So when we finally crossed paths once again recently, I made the time in my schedule to go meet with him and catch up on the last… thirty years or so.
We decided to meet up at a local coffee shop in Santa Monica on a Saturday afternoon. I arrived in the westside early on purpose so that I could do a quick surf check from the Venice Pier up to the Santa Monica Pier. Just a mile or so up from a walled-up Venice is Santa Monica’s Bay Street. Bay Street is significant to me because my very first memory of learning how to surf took place here, eon’s ago. I’m sure it was documented on some cave inscription somewhere.
Conditions could not have been more perfect. Offshore breeze, plenty of set waves lining up, and only two guys out.
I was nearly late to lunch with Larry.
